5 Simple Ways to Make Homemaking More Joyful

Homemaking is more than just cleaning, cooking, and managing a household—it’s about creating a space where love, faith, and family can flourish.

But let’s be honest, some days it can feel overwhelming, repetitive, or even discouraging.

If you’ve ever struggled with finding joy in homemaking, you’re not alone! I absolutely still have moments where I’m overwhelmed and discouraged, but routines and perspective have been fundamental in making homemaking more enjoyable.

Despite my struggles, homemaking has become my ministry.

Am I perfect at it? Nope.

Is my home still a mess most days? Yep. You bet.

In fact, most days you can find small piles of limestone sandy-dirt in the corners of my home because all of my kids have been trekking through the house from playing for hours outside.

You’ll find random sticks and rocks in corners and around baseboards of rooms.

My plants have some of that limestone dust on them, too.

I typically have some type of water “stain” on my stainless steel appliances and my cabinets have sticky fingerprints.

Also, my counters are cluttered and full most days and my sink and my dishwasher are both overflowing most days.

But, I CHOOSE to see these things as JOY, not inconveniences or burdens.

Do these things annoy me? Absolutely. I get frustrated on almost a daily basis that I simply cannot keep up with the crazy my home is.

I choose joy, because my house is filled with 3 beautiful children that drive me crazy, and my goodness, are they messy and loud.

They are blessings. My answered prayers.

For years I dreamed and prayed for baby feet to run through my home with giggles and sticky messes everywhere. Now, I’m living in those dreams and answered prayers.

But for the longest time I struggled with homemaking, which will be another post for another time. You can read some of my testimony here.

Homemaking isn’t about having a clean home constantly, or one that is Pinterest or social media perfect.

Let’s set the record straight. Homemaking is about keeping a home where your family feels comfortable, warm, invited, at peace and free to be themselves.

You see, homemaking is where I am at my best, but also my worst. It’s where I feel passionate about what I’m doing and I know God sees all the effort I put in to making our house a home.

It’s also the biggest reason of anxiety and stress for me. Because it is one of the most important parts of my life.

I’ve learned that homemaking isn’t about perfection—it’s about embracing the beauty of home and family with a very grateful heart. We could lose everything so quickly.

Life is so unpredictable and I won’t take our blessings for granted.

Whether you’re a homemaker, someone who desires to be a homemaker or homemaking intrigues you, here are five simple ways to bring more joy into your daily routine:

1. Start Your Day with Prayer & Gratitude

The way we start our mornings sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Before jumping into tasks, take a moment to pray, read scripture, or simply thank God for the gift of your home and family. A heart rooted in gratitude can transform even the most mundane tasks into acts of love.

As women of faith, we know the Proverbs 31 wife well. You may strive to be her for your husband and family, but the Proverbs 31 woman was not perfect.

I’ve posted my daily morning quiet time on social media and on my channel. You can see it here.

2. Create a Peaceful and Cozy Atmosphere

Homemaking isn’t just about keeping a house clean—it’s about making it a place of comfort, warmth, and love.

Find things that bring you joy and warmth to your day to create the space you desire.

I used to light a candle every morning, this was so soothing and gave my home a warm and peaceful atmosphere. The crackling of the wick and the flickering light gave a sense of tranquility. Now I diffuse essential oils with a low-lit diffuser since I stopped buying candles, but I keep my home dark in the mornings with warm lit lamps too.

As soon as I wake, I play worship music on our TV very quietly before the kids get up. Worship music plays in our house most of the day as we do our day-to-day activities.

In the Spring and fall, I open the curtains for lots of daylight and I open up the windows for fresh air.

Small touches can make a big difference in how your home feels for you and your family.

3. Find Joy in the Little Moments

Instead of focusing on the never-ending to-do list, embrace the little joys of homemaking.

Savor the smell of fresh-baked bread, enjoy the giggles of your children while folding laundry together, or find satisfaction in making a simple meal that truly nourishes your family.

There is something around you at all times that you can find gratitude and joy in.

The everyday moments are the ones that matter most.

And there is always God to find your joy in. He is our joy.

Is it always easy to find joy? Sometimes it’s not.

Life throws so many curveballs, but the one thing that stays consistent is God.

IF you’re putting your trust in Him and you’re relying on Him for your life, then you know that every moment is a blessing to be alive and breathing. Whether you’re in the middle of a hard trial, or you’re enjoying beauty and happiness around you, God is persistent on loving you and keeping you on Earth until He calls you home.

THAT is joy.

God is joy.

4. Make Homemaking a Family Effort

You don’t have to do it all alone! Involve your children in age-appropriate chores, cook meals together, or turn tidying up into a fun game. When everyone plays a role in caring for the home, it not only lightens the load but also teaches valuable life skills and responsibility.

5. Give Yourself Grace

Not every day will be picture-perfect, and that’s okay. Some days, the dishes will pile up, the laundry will overflow, and dinner might be store-bought instead of homemade. Give yourself grace, embrace the season you’re in, and remember that homemaking is about love, not perfection.

One day your home will be empty of children, empty of toys, and messes. Those days will be bittersweet. So even though the dirt, chaos and mess feel frustrating, soak them up, because they mean that your home is FILLED with love.

Final Thoughts

Joyful homemaking isn’t about having the perfect home—it’s about creating a space filled with love, peace, and faith. When we approach our daily tasks with a heart of gratitude, intention and purpose, even the simplest routines can become beautiful acts of service. Make homemaking your ministry too.
